Travel During Covid-19 Pandemic

What is it like traveling during a pandemic?

Sits down a seat or two away from you—no one is breathing on you!

Covid-19 has struck the world nearing the end of December 2019 and has not left us alone ever since. Laws changed, we were strapped to our houses for weeks on end with nothing and life as we know it became stagnant. Dust didn’t rumble, cars didn’t roll—your once noisy neighbors became quiet.

When we regained some version of what we perceived as normal life back, the world has changed completely. Social distancing is implemented, hand sanitizers are everywhere—there is no more carelessness, no more adventures, nothing. Countless industries suffered: tourism and traveling being the most effected industries. Domestic and international flights were cancelled across the globe in order to isolate and stop the spread of the new Corona Virus (even though it was already spreading like wildfire)—and it loomed a lot longer than we expected.

But life could not be postponed for that long.

New travel regulations, especially in and around the US, England, Ireland, Scotland or Wales, require that you must present a negative Covid-19 test up to 3 days before departure of any flight. Once you have presented a negative Covid-19 test, jumped on the first plane and traveled across the globe to England, your Covid-19 restricted journey does not stop there. You have a free 2-week self-isolated holiday in your hotel room that you can use to watch series, scroll through social media—anything but explore outside the four walls you’re caught in.

Of course, some countries are still under hard lockdown and international traveling is limited or banned. You will probably only be able to hop, skip and jump between two or more countries in this current time if it’s for business. You can forget about that beautiful trip to the Bahamas you have been planning for.

Once you step into your plane, it will reek of strong sanitizers and cleaners—a comforting smell that’ll wash over your body like the sweet aroma of homemade food. You sit down and watch over your facemask as the person next to you sits down a seat or two away from you—no one is breathing on you. Social distancing is the Kryptonite you never thought you needed. You could be able to order small refreshments and meals, as per usual, watch a movie or series you saved on your tablet or laptop for the plane flight to keep you distracted from the uncomfortable seats. An hour into your movie you throw a silent fit, because the characters in the series go out to clubs without masks…only for you to realize that the movie was shot pre-Covid-19 and now you feel slightly empty and sad (or it’s just the glass of champagne doing its thing).

Recently, another requirement to jump on a plane to any country is a Covid-19 vaccine. This is of course not relevant to every country you want to travel to, because every country has different accessibility to vaccines. This regulation also depends on the variant of Covid-19 you could be exposed to.

For local travels, you could only keep to traditional Covid-19 prevention—keep socially distanced from groups of people or people you do not know, between 1,8 and 2 meters. Wear your mask, over your nose, at all times. Carry a bottle of sanitizer with you for in case you encounter a situation where you cannot wash your hands.

As humans, we are made to adapt and overcome, and Covid-19 is just proof that we are capable of adapting to a new normal that might go on for decades. Traveling is not something that should be ignored or lightly played off as a non-essential, it is an essential part of life today, for basic human interaction between distant relatives and income for so many families. Therefore, we must take it seriously and avoid adding fuel to a fire.
